If you do not have the money and would like to enroll the Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) program or require any other training certification programs to secure employment, you may qualify for government funding. The government refers to short-term training (less than two weeks) as an exposure course any program longer than two weeks may be referred to as another program.

Government Funding

Exposure courses, such as Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST), must meet the following criteria:
  • to provide short-term specific courses needed to obtain employment, such as security work
  • to augment an individual's job specific skills or provide the certification required to obtain employment in as short a period as is possible, and
  • to respond to employer or industry need for skilled workers by providing short-term skills enhancement.
 
Examples of eligble Exposure Courses are courses that teach basic skills required for a job:
  • Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) online or in classroom
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • H2S Alive
  • Computer courses that augment basic skills and are required for a specific job (for example Word Perfect to Microsoft Office)
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Driver Training only to upgrade a driver's licence from Class 3 to Class 1 for a specific job

 

Are You Eligible?

To be eligible for an Exposure Course an individual must be:
  • Unemployed or marginally employed
  • Job ready except for specific skills
  • Committed to seeking employment at the conclusion of their training in security related positions, such as Security Guard, Loss Prevention Worker, Executive Security, Dog Patrol or Alarm Responder, etc.
  • An Alberta resident, or
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident or convention refugee and be legally entitled to work and train in Canada
In addition, the individual must have a job offer or a reasonable expectation of employment within one month of completing the Exposure Course. It is the individual's responsibility to provide a letter or some other indication from a prospective employer indicating that employment will be available upon completion of the training.
 
 

Do I Qualify for a Security License and Job Placement?

In order to qualify for a security License and job placement, individuals must meet the following requirements:
 
  • Must be 18+ years of age
  • Valid Government Issued ID
  • Drivers License (an asset)
  • Criminal Record Check
  • Speak English Fluently 
  • Physically Fit
  • Drug/Alcohol Testing    
  • Honest, Reliable and Dependable     
  • Individual Licensing Requirements
  • Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST)
  • First Aid and CPR Training
  • WHMIS 
  • H2s Alive
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods 

 

Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST)

Register Now! SEGI's TrainMyGuard.com is offering Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) course ONLINE and in the CLASSROOM. This 40 hour course is mandatory for those wishing to become licensed Security Professional in Alberta. TrainMyGuard.com's ABST course exceeds Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) standards.
 
Upon successful completion of our program, participants will be able to seek employment as a Security Guard, Loss Prevention Worker, Executive Security or Alarm Responder within the Security Industry.
